Starting with the people museums are losing Working as a five-person team, we combined secondary research with five user interviews to understand why Gen Z visitors disengage from cultural spaces. We mapped assumptions using a CSD Matrix and used interview findings to identify the real friction points not just the obvious ones.

key insights

Visits are surface-level, not exploratory. Culture sticks when it's social. Academic language shuts people out. Unstructured visits lead to burnout. And for Gen Z, personalisation isn't optional it's expected. These five insights became the foundation for every design decision that followed.

User Persona

Emma discovers exhibitions on TikTok and needs the experience to feel made for her. She's drawn to interactive, participatory spaces. She disengages the moment it becomes a wall of text.

"I end up just looking at the art because the text is often too much and complicated to understand."

Crazy 8s

Eight ideas in eight minutes. One direction kept coming back. Graffiti walls, Instax booths, historical avatars, live quizzes. The concept that won every round: use the museum's physical space as the game board not a digital layer on top of the visit, but the visit itself restructured as a game.

The Solution

Find X turns every exhibit into a clue. Hidden X markers sit on real artworks. Players get a clue card, find the X, photograph it, earn points. The phone points back toward the art not away from it. Players personalise their character before the first clue arrives, so investment is built from the very first tap.
