Chaos, or The Struggle of the Four Elements Louis Finson (1570/1578–1617)

Four naked bodies tumble over one another in a whirl of arms and legs. They represent the Four Elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire – the chaotic state before creation. Louis Finson, a Flemish follower of Caravaggio, gave human form to Ovid’s beginning of the world: a fierce struggle of primordial forces, from which order and movement will slowly emerge.
